What is intuitive eating?

You were born a natural intuitive eater. Babies cry, they eat, they stop until they're hungry again. Kids innately balance our their food intake, eating when they're hungry and stopping once they feel full. As we grow older and rules and restrictions are set around food, we lose our inner intuitive eater. We learn to finish everyone on our plate. We learn that dessert is a reward or can be taken away if we misbehave.

Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach to wellness that helps you break the cycle of dieting, heal your relationship with food, and get back in touch with the intuitive eater inside you. Intuitive eating is not a diet. It's a way to eat outside of diet mentality, with a focus on using your internal cues to guide eating choices. But it's so much more than the "hunger-fullness diet" - we'll explore your food beliefs, behaviours, and self-talk while diving deep into what food means to you.

Will this work for me? Every diet I've tried has failed.

I completely understand, and wondering if this will 'work' is so normal. Look back on your past experiences with diets and put that into perspective with where you are now. Diets haven’t worked in the long term, but this is a completely different way of approaching eating and your body. This process is new and it's so different from anything you’ve done before. If diets haven’t worked, now is the time to try something different- and I’ll be there with you every step of the way.

I have worked with other healthcare professionals in the past and it hasn't worked out. How will this be different?

Honesty and openness are huge values to me in the relationships I develop with clients. I want you to know that whatever is on your mind, you can tell me. During our work together, we will continually check in with each other about how things are going, how you’re feeling, and what is/isn’t working for you. I take a personalized approach with you- if something isn’t working, that's not a problem! All it means is that we have an opportunity to adjust the strategy so that you can truly make this work for you.

Can I still work with you if I want to lose weight?

Yes! It's okay that you still want to lose weight right now. Nearly every one of the clients that I work with also starts from that place. In our work together, my goal is to meet you where you’re at. A big part of what I want to do is to help you understand what they really want from weight loss so that we can slowly shift focus to those other pieces that help you FEEL the way you want to feel from weight loss without being hyper focused on the scale. If you want to lose weight right now, that's normal and it does not mean you’re not right for intuitive eating or that you can’t start this process.

If I let myself eat whatever I want, won't I eat uncontrollably and gain weight?

This is a very common concern! It's important to recognize that is is the diet mentality that causes overeating and binging. Once you learn to make peace with all foods- and your body knows you can have these foods whenever you want- you'll be able to truly listen to your body's feelings of hunger, satisfaction, and fullness.

I'm really busy- how will I find the time?

Life doesn't have a pause button. There's never going to be a time where things are suddenly easier. Often we throw the baby out with the bathwater and if we can't do it all the way, we don't do anything.

Intuitive eating isn't about perfection- that's the beauty of it! Many of my clients are busy professionals, mom's with days that are non-stop, or people who travel constantly. When you work with me, you'll learn how to make changes (and maintain them) in the midst of your normal, busy, life.
